Batu Katak Tour

Welcome to the new ecotourist area of Batu Katak where the tribe of Karo people protects the environment and shows locals and foreigners how to live in harmony with nature.

Become part of our community for a little while and join the local guides for exciting rafting trips, watching wildlife or explore the secrets of the Watter cave.

Batu Katak is a tiny village on the edge of Sumatra’s famous Gunung Leuser National Park and the lesser explored Gunung Kapoor, nestled next to the beautiful Berkhail river. Gunung Leuser is one of only two places left in the world where you can see orang utans in the wild.

Our ancestors come from the ancient tribe of Karo people who inhabited the land of North Sumatra thousands of years ago.
Our village is currently inhabited by 550 people who make their living by planting caoutchouc and palm oil trees but are trying to get back to a small-scale agriculture growing fruit and vegetables.

We are one hour from the famous, and more touristic Bukit Lawang, and three to four hours from Medan airport, which has connections to Singapore, Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur.

If you want to relax and enjoy the tranquility of the river, drink a beer, go tubing or swimming down the river or jungle trekking and get an authentic, wild experience we are the place for you! You will see wild orangutans and gibbons. BATU KATAK also have some of the worlds’ rarest and most exotic flowers*. If you are lucky, you may also catch a glimpse of a honey bear or tiger, the king of the jungle.

Batu Katak is a small, truly Sumatran village which is committed to eco-tourism. We want to preserve our beautiful, unique rainforest for the future. It is a wonderful place to enjoy the jungle without the crowds of people that you might find in other places in Sumatra or Borneo.
